TRICONEX 8112

The Triconex 8112 is a Remote Expansion (RXM) Chassis used in the Tricon safety-instrumented system (SIS). It is designed to expand I/O capacity and extend the distance between safety controllers and field equipment in high-availability, fault-tolerant control systems.


What the TRICONEX 8112 is

The 8112 is part of the Tricon modular chassis family:

  • 8110 → Main chassis
  • 8111 → Expansion chassis
  • 8112 → Remote Expansion (RXM) chassis

It allows a Tricon system to grow beyond the main rack and place I/O closer to field devices while maintaining triple-modular redundancy (TMR) communication and reliability.

1) Remote I/O expansion

  • Adds extra I/O slots to increase system capacity.
  • A Tricon system can include up to 15 chassis (main + expansion + remote).
  • Supports up to 118 I/O and communication modules in a full system.

2) Long-distance installation

  • Can be installed up to 100 ft (30 m) from the main chassis.
  • Ideal for large plants where field devices are distributed.

3) Triple-redundant communication

  • Uses triplicated RS-485 I/O expansion buses (A/B/C) for fault-tolerant data transfer.
  • Typical bus speeds:
    • Triplicated I/O bus: 375 kbps
    • Communication bus: 2 Mbps

4) High availability design

  • Supports dual redundant power supplies.
  • Built for continuous operation in safety-critical processes.
