TRICONEX 3636R

The TRICONEX 3636R is a high-reliability relay output module used in Tricon safety instrumented systems (SIS). It is designed to drive field devices and alarms in critical industrial safety applications such as oil & gas, petrochemical, power generation, and nuclear facilities.

Key Features

  • 32 independent relay outputs (dry contact)
  • Designed for Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS)
  • SIL3 certified (IEC 61508 / IEC 62061)
  • Wide operating temperature: –40°C to +70/75°C
  • Supports hot-spare modules
  • Built-in diagnostics and loopback testing
  • High immunity to electrical noise
  • Requires external termination panel (ETP)

The module receives output commands from the Tricon main processors and uses voting logic to ensure safe operation before energizing relays.

Main Technical Specifications

Sources confirm it is a non-triplicated relay output module used for non-critical points where solid-state outputs are unsuitable (e.g., annunciator panels).

How the 3636R Works

  1. The Tricon controller sends output signals on three channels.
  2. The module performs voting logic.
  3. Verified outputs energize the 32 relays.
  4. Loopback diagnostics verify each relay independently.
  5. Any fault triggers the chassis alarm automatically.

This design ensures fail-safe output switching even if one channel fails.

Typical Applications

Used when a system needs physical relay switching rather than solid-state outputs:

  • Emergency shutdown systems (ESD)
  • Burner management systems (BMS)
  • Fire & gas systems
  • Turbine control
  • Alarm and annunciator panels
  • Interlocking and trip systems

3636R vs Solid-State Outputs

Use the 3636R when:

  • You need dry contact relay switching
  • Field devices require galvanic isolation
  • Output loads are AC/DC switching circuits
  • System safety certification is required
